Maceo Pinkard toured with his own orchestra, wrote the all-black revue, Liza, in 1922, and ran a theatrical agency before moving to New York and establishing a music publishing business. It was while he was with Ben Bernie’s orchestra that he collaborated on “Sweet Georgia Brown” (1925) with Bernie and Ken Casey.
Many of his tunes were picked up from the start by jazz artists. “Sugar” (1928) was sung by Ethel Waters; Paul Whiteman’s band featured Bix Beiderbecke on the tune; and in 1955 it was sung by Peggy Lee in Pete Kelly’s Blues. “Gimme a Little Kiss, Will Ya, Huh?” was included in the 1929 movie Show Boat. “Them There Eyes” (1930) was performed by singers Bing Crosby and Billie Holiday and the big bands of Benny Goodman and Duke Ellington, and it continues to crop up as a favorite of vocalists and vocal groups.
