Robert Mellin , the English born writer of both music and lyrics, had several hits in the ‘50s, among them composer Guy Wood’s “My One and Only Love” (1953) to which he fitted lyrics. It was recorded by such luminaries as Ella Fitzgerald and Johnny Hartman / John Coltrane. His lyrics for a German tune by Lotar Olias, “You, You, You,” become a hit for the Ames Brothers in 1953. “Stranger on the Shore” was an instrumental hit in 1962 for Acker Bilk and was featured in the film Mr. Holland’s Opus (1995). Even Mellin’s lesser known works have been recorded by Nat “King” Cole and Frank Sinatra, and “Rain (Falling from the Sky),” co-written with Gunther Finlay, appeared on the soundtrack of Picnic (1955). Mellin devoted his later career to establishing his music publishing company and writing soundtracks for TV.
