Greg Abate grew up in Woonsocket, Rhode Island, where he started out playing the clarinet at age 10. He completed a four-year program at Berklee College of Music, played lead alto for the Ray Charles Orchestra (1973-74) and jazz tenor for the Artie Shaw Orchestra (1985-87). For the last two decades Greg has performed internationally as a post hard bop soloist and has recorded on over a dozen CDs including Evolution which was nominated for a Grammy in four categories in 2004.
Greg lives in Coventry, Rhode Island where he is an adjunct professor of jazz studies at Rhode Island College. He performs with his quartet and conducts workshops and master classes locally and abroad.
