James Edward Davis shares publication credit for “Lover Man” with Ram Ramirez and Jimmy Sherman. According to Billie Holiday, in her 1956 autobiography Lady Sings the Blues,
”Jimmy [Davis] was in the Army when he wrote ‘Lover Man’ and brought it straight to me.”
Before she could record it he was shipped back to Europe and she never saw him again. Davis also wrote “The Blues Jumped Up And Got Me” (1946) with Jack Hoffman and is credited with co-writing several other lesser-known songs.
