Bob Allen was a baritone ballad singer with the Hal Kemp orchestra from 1933 until 1940 when Kemp died in an automobile accident. Allen took over the Kemp orchestra and later Vince Patti’s Cleveland orchestra, but both ventures were short lived, partly as a result of his musicians getting drafted. In 1944 Allen joined the Tommy Dorsey orchestra, replacing Dick Haymes and it was in this period he introduced “I Should Care” in MGM’s Thrill of a Romance in 1945. This time Allen himself was drafted, suspending his performing career until after the warwhen he freelanced with Carmen Cavallaro, Isham Jones, and Hoagy Carmichael.
