Cliff Weston was born in Queens, New York and was a vocalist and trumpeter with the Joe Haymes band at least as early as 1933 when they charted the hit song, “I Cover the Waterfront.”
When Tommy Dorsey took over the band in 1935, Weston went with it. While with Dorsey, Weston recorded two big vocal hits: the seasonal classic, “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town” with Edythe Wright (1935) and “Alone” (1936) which topped the charts that year. Both recordings are included in a number of compilations. He recorded two lesser known songs in 1935--“At a Little Church Affair” and “The Magic Key.”
When Dorsey hired Jack Leonard, Weston returned to the new Haymes band and recorded the comical “I’se a Muggin’” (1936), written by violinist Stuff Smith, and the popular “Lady in Red.”
