Ginny Simms was discovered by Kay Kyser and became such a popular vocalist with his band that she recorded as Ginny Simms and Her Orchestra, backed by the Kyser personnel. She was a major attraction on his radio show, “Kay Kyser’s Kollege of Musical Knowledge,” a slapstick musical revue, and appeared in three of the Kyser band’s films from 1939 to 1941, the last of which featured her as co-star. She left the band and had her own popular radio show during the war years. Her talent and good looks led to a movie contract and two films in 1942, Seven Days Leave and Here We Go Again. She had a feature role in the Abbott and Costello comic musical Hit the Ice (1943) which led to Broadway Rhythm (1944), based on Oscar Hammerstein’s Broadway show, Very Warm for May. In 1945 she made Shady Lady, and the following year she appeared in Night and Day (1946), loosely based on the life of Cole Porter. She starred in Disc Jockey in 1951 before retiring, although later she did record two more albums, one featuring Kyser’s music and the other, her own work.
