Abbie Mitchell enjoyed international success through African-American musical theater starring in the musical In Dahomey (1903) followed by Bandana Land (1908) and The Red Moon (1909). As a dramatic actress she appeared in Abraham’s Bosom (1926), Coquette (with Helen Hayes) (1927) and played Addie in Lillian Hellman’s Little Foxes (1939). Within the realm of jazz she is remembered for introducing “Summertime” from the American folk opera Porgy and Bess (1935).
