Ruby Hill is most often remembered for her role as leading lady Della Green in the Broadway musical St. Louis Woman (1946) in which she introduced the two Harold Arlen / Johnny Mercer standards, “Come Rain or Come Shine,” with Harold Nicholas, and “Anyplace I Hang My Hat Is Home.”
Previous to her starring role, Hill was a regular performer in New York nightclubs, including the famed Cotton Club. She also appeared in the musical comedy film, Ebony Parade (1947) with Cab Calloway, Count Basie, and Dorothy Dandridge and was a guest star along with Louis Prima, Buddy Lester, and Sonny Howard in the 1949 season opener of Ed Sullivan’s television variety show, Toast of the Town, singing “One for My Baby” and “The One I Love (Belongs to Somebody Else).”
Hill’s vocals from St. Louis Woman were included in the 1946 Capitol Records original cast album, five 10-inch 78 RPM records, re-released as a 10-inch LP in the early ‘50s, and again in the late ‘60s as a 12-inch LP reprocessed as stereo. A CD edition by Broadway Angel’s was released in 1992.
