Evelyn Herbert made her Broadway debut in 1923 and only two years later starred in Princess Flavia, an operetta by Sigmund Romberg based on The Prisoner of Zenda. In 1926 she played the lead with her real-life husband, baritone Robert Halliday, in Romberg’s highly successful Desert Song where they introduced the title tune and “One Alone.” Herbert appeared in Romberg’s My Maryland in 1927, and then the couple starred together in another Romberg creation, The New Moon (1928) with lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein, Jr., where they introduced “Wanting You” and “Lover Come Back to Me.” Their last joint appearance on Broadway was in the less successful Princess Charming (1930). Herbert appeared in two more Broadway shows in 1933 and 1935 and starred with Halliday in the 1935 film, Desert Harmonies, before retiring.
