Dorothy Dickson began her career in a ballroom dance act with her husband Carl Hyson (born Heisen). Between 1917 and 1919 they danced and sang their way through two Ziegfeld Follies, Jerome Kern’s Oh Boy, and George M. Cohan’s The Royal Vagabond. In 1921 they left for London to appear in a revue. Dorothy was quickly selected to star in the London production of Kern’s Sally in which she introduced “Look for the Silver Lining.” Her performance propelled the native-born American to stardom on the London stage where she appeared in one show after another from 1922-1937, also introducing “These Foolish Things” in a 1936 revue. During WWII she organized the London version of America’s Stage Door Canteen where troops could meet stars and be entertained. She was a life-long friend of Queen Elizabeth I whom she had met in the early ‘20s.
