Carol Bruce was born in Great Neck, New York, and began her show business career in Canada. She returned to the U.S. to appear in George White’s Scandals of 1939. The following year she was a hit in Louisiana Purchase, singing the title song and the spiritual, “The Lord Done Fixed Up My Soul.” She appeared as herself in the film Larry Clinton and His Orchestra (1938) and Swing’s the Thing (1942). In 1941 she made two films—This Woman Is Mine and Keep ‘em Flying, in which she sang “You Don’t Know What Love Is.” The song was dropped from the film before release but Bruce performed it again in the 1942 film Behind the Eight Ball. Subsequently Bruce launched a career in television, appearing in over two dozen shows between 1948 and 2000, including, Studio One (1948), WKRP in Cincinnati (1978), Golden Girls (1985), Diagnosis Murder (1993) and That’s Life (2000). She also appeared in stage revivals of Show Boat (1946) and Pal Joey (1961).
