Levinson gives a full account of James’ life from his youth in the circus to his late years still leading his big band. Like drummer Buddy Rich, James had anything but a normal childhood, began his professional life at age three, and worked throughout his life. Although dismissed by jazz critics for his romantic dance music, James was highly respected for his extraordinary abilities as a trumpeter by such jazz greats as Louis Armstrong, Lionel Hampton, and Miles Davis. His colorful life and marriage to movie star Betty Grable was marred by womanizing, gambling, and alcohol. But as a leader he expected the best of himself and was respected by his band members. Levinson’s examination and evaluation of James musical output is very useful, and a companion CD featuring 16 of James’ hits is available.
Noted jazz publicist Peter J. Levinson knew Harry James for 24 years. He is also the author of Tommy Dorsey: Livin’ in a Great Big Way, A Biography and is currently at work on a biography of Nelson Riddle.
