JazzStandards Bookstore (<i>Nat King Cole</i>)

Epstein’s very readable biography of Cole delves into both his music and his personal life. He takes us from the early influence of Earl Hines, through the trio’s jazz years, to Cole’s enormous success as a vocalist who sold more records than anyone except Bing Crosby. Cole’s financial problems, his marriages, his run-ins with racism are all covered in a straightforward manner.

Daniel Mark Epstein is the biographer of Aimee Semple McPherson and author of books of poetry, stories and essays. His plays have been produced Off-Broadway and in regional theaters. He lives in Baltimore with his wife and son.
