Saxophonist Charlie Parker was one of the most influential musicians in the history of jazz, and his colorful life, plagued by substance abuse, generated many legends which Woideck confronts in his biography, Part I of the book. Part II deals with an analysis of Parker’s music which is broken down into four separate periods: his pre-apprenticeship, early recordings, mature period, and late recordings. Woideck includes an Index, and his musical discussions and solo transcriptions are keyed to compact discs for easy access.
Carl Woideck is a saxophonist, Instructor of Jazz History at the University of Oregon, and the author of The Charlie Parker Companion: Six Decades of Commentary andThe John Coltrane Companion: Five Decades of Commentary.
