Author Owens concentrates on the era of bebop from its early beginnings to its influence on the entire vocabulary of jazz, from its initially cool reception by listeners to the universal embrace of its language. He describes the ensembles, the individual players and their contributions (including an instrument-by-instrument examination), analyzes the music in transcribed and annotated examples, and brings the reader up-to-date with present day musicians.
Thomas Owens is Professor of Music at El Camino College in Torrance, California.
