Gershwin himself comments with wit and wisdom on his lyrics which are grouped into arbitrary, often amusing categories. “With Place Names,” for instance, is self-explanatory, but then there is the chapter, “Sound Effects,” which includes songs such as “’S Wonderful” and “They All Laughed” or the chapter “A Gathering of Guidance” which includes “Clap Yo’ Hands” and “Slap That Bass.”
Lyrics on Several Occasions is a must-have book for anyone interested in Ira Gershwin’s songs. Of the nearly 30 songs listed in the JazzStandards.com top 1000, all but five, are presented in his book, and the commentaries are fascinating
