Stardust Melodies

Will Friedwald
Hardcover: 416 pages
Pantheon; 1st edition
April 23, 2002
ISBN: 0375420894

Stardust Melodies has twelve well-written chapters devoted to twelve jazz standards: “Star Dust,” “St. Louis Blues,” “Mack the Knife,” “Ol’ Man River,” “Body and Soul,” “I Got Rhythm,” “As Time Goes By,” “Night and Day,” “Stormy Weather,” “Summertime,” “My Funny Valentine,” and “Lush Life.”

With regard to jazz standards, each song receives extensive documentation on its origin, a detailed discussion of the music and lyrics, and extensive comments on its recording history. Friedwald’s writing has been characterized as opinionated. But, knowing that, this book should still be of great interest to both recreational readers and researchers. There is no index.

Will Friedwald is the author of The Future of Jazz, Jazz Singing: America’s Great Voices from Bessie Smith to Bebop and Beyond, and Sinatra! The Song Is You: A Singer’s Art. He co-authored Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies: Complete Illustrated Guide to Warner Bros. Cartoons with Jerry Beck.
