The Billboard Book of Top 40 Hits

Joel Whitburn
Paperback: 896 pages
Watson-Guptill Publications; 7th Rev edition
November 1, 2000
ISBN: 0823076903

This book lists alphabetically by song title and by artist all of the singles to make the Billboard charts from 1955 to 1995. There is a comprehensive chapter on “The Record Holders” which charts the songs in several ways and includes a chronological listing, eliminating the need for an additional index.

For jazz standards fans and researchers, this is part two of Joel Whitburn’s Pop Hits 1940-1954: Singles and Albums, the preeminent reference book of pop chart ranking information for the Golden Age of popular music. These are the texts you use to find the successful recordings that popularized the jazz standards.

Since 1970 Joel Whitburn has authored over 60 books that research and chart pop music. He is known as “The World’s #1 Chart Authority.” His comprehensive research even dates back to 1890. In collaboration with Rhino Records he has produced over 100 CD compilations of his favorite songs in a variety of musical categories.
