Broadway: An Encyclopedia is Ken Bloom’s guide to the history, people, and places of Times Square, including entries for the major theaters, playwrights, composers, lyricists, producers, and performers. The book is organized as an encyclopedia with alphabetical listings regardless of whether the entry is a person, place or thing.
With regard to recreational reading or research on the jazz standards, this fascinating encyclopedia is a good coffee-table reader and also a serious reference book, especially for the biographies of composers, lyricists, and the performers who introduced many of the songs on stage. The index lists the people, theaters, and shows, but not the songs.
Ken Bloom is also the author of Broadway Musicals : The 101 Greatest Shows of All Time; Hollywood Song: The Complete Film & Musical Companion; American Song: The Complete Musical Theatre Companion 1877-1995; and American Song: The Complete Companion to Tin Pan Alley Song.
