This is an excellent coffee-table book that comprehensively reviews over 1300 Hollywood musicals. The book is organized by year, beginning in 1927 and, depending on the edition, ending somewhere in the 1980’s. Nearly all the films have at least one photo.
For those researching jazz standards, the songs for each film are listed. The persons who sang them are credited occasionally. There are multiple indexes for songs, composers and lyricists, films, performers, and other creative personnel.
At the time of its publication, Clive Hirschhorn was a film critic and then a drama critic for the London Sunday Express. He is also the author of Gene Kelly: A Biography; The Universal Story: The Complete History of the Studio and All Its Films; The Columbia Story; and The Films of James Mason.
